PLAYER REPRESENTATIVE ANNOUNCEMENT

Rebecca Fowler image 1

We are delighted to welcome Rebecca Fowler as a Player Representative for the BDSA. Rebecca will be helping us to drive forward initiatives supporting our wheelchair dance members. At the top of Rebecca’s ‘To Do List’ is helping the BDSA find ways to increase teaching investment in wheelchair dancers. We also want to ensure dance schools have all the right facilities in place to support dancers with access requirements.

Rebecca is also keen to set up a learning course for dance teachers, led by wheelchair dance experts. This will help teachers gain the skills and knowledge they need to support wheelchair dancers in their schools.

Rebecca brings a wealth of experience to her new role. Her wheelchair dance career started in 2017 when she joined FreeWheelin Dance in Birmingham.  Within a year, she won the World ParaCheer Championships as part of Team England in the Hip Hop category. Later in 2018, she was crowned Ballroom, Latin and Freestyle champion at the Para Dance UK National Championships. She repeated this accolade in Ballroom and Latin the following year and placed 2nd in Freestyle too.

A strong advocate for using physical activity to improve mental wellbeing, Rebecca works with the We Are Undefeatable charity campaign. The campaign promotes the benefits of physical activity for people living with long-term health conditions.

Performing is another big part of Rebecca’s dance life. She has performed at various festivals in Birmingham including the International Dance and Inclusive Sports Festivals. She had a lead dance role at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in the city in 2022 where she also participated in the opening of the cultural festival. Last year, Rebecca took on the title role in Propel Dance’s fantastic touring production of The Snow Queen.

Earlier this year, Rebecca returned to competition, winning the Ballroom, Latin and Freestyle categories at the Welsh Open and gaining second place for all three categories at the Oxford Inclusive Dance Competition.

Rebecca can’t wait to get stuck into her latest challenge.

“I am delighted to take on the role of player representative with the BDSA.  I look forward to representing the wheelchair dance community and working towards growing wheelchair dance sport in the UK.”
